Cross-Cultural Challenges in Platform Content Moderation Policies

Abstract

Platform content moderation has become increasingly complex due to the diverse cultural contexts in which platforms operate. Cross-cultural challenges arise from differing societal norms, legal requirements, and user expectations, which make the creation of universally acceptable moderation policies a difficult task. This manuscript addresses such challenges by investigating their impact on policy development and implementation. Based on a comprehensive literature review and analysis of case studies, we identify good practices and strategies for addressing cultural disparities in content moderation. The study provides actionable insights for platforms seeking to balance global consistency with local relevance.
